Slash ft Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators 9/7/12

Okay, I have a lot to say so I’m going to divide this up in parts so I don’t leave anything out. Here is my wrap up of Slash’s show at Stubb’s on Sept 7…

First off, I want to thank my body for holding up for the past few days even though I insist on abusing the shit out it and can’t seem to function on any sort of normal schedule to save my life…literally. Through not sleeping, not eating, standing in 106 degree heat for hours on end, drinking nothing but two cups of luke warm water, AND sweating my lady balls off all night, my body refused to collapse or give in. So thanks to myself for not dying! I had been up for three days straight beforehand and standing directly in the sun without drinking hardly anything was definitely risky.

Next I want to say thank you to my amazing friend, TFO, for not only buying the tickets but then flying all the way to Texas and enduring the elements with me to see the amazing Slash. Also thanks for not dying as well! I know you had no desire to queue at two in the afternoon for a show that started at eight but I totally appreciate the fact that you did!

To Stubb’s security, I hate you all and am anticipating your immediate firing! The guys outside the venue weren’t so bad, but once we were inside it was a whole ‘nother ball game. My friend and I got barricade but were all the way at the end on the far right. Since I’m super small (which is always a problem at shows), I was pretty much forced off to the side, outside of the barricade so I was almost next to the stage. I can see why security would have an issue with this considering I could trample the bands’ equipment and rush the stage or something like that, but the fact that they wanted me to move was asinine; there was no where to move to. Five times the security guard came over and attempted to push me into people just to get me behind the barricade. Maybe the first few times I could tolerate but after being there for a few hours and proving time and time again that I not only had no room behind the barricade, but also that I wasn’t some lunatic that was going to ruin the show, they all should have left me alone. Even during the last song of the encore I still had the asshats giving me trouble! I assure you idiots I’m not going to do anything stupid, I just don’t want to be crushed to death if that’s okay with you.

To the photographers, I hate every single one of you and I hope you’re cameras we’re crushed on your way out the door. Again, we’re on the very end of the stage; there’s two huge speakers already blocking the right side of the stage, we don’t need a whole team of press blocking the center as well. Luckily they were only given three songs per band but even that drove me up a wall. I much prefer Guns n’ Roses photo policy: one song for photographers only! If you can’t get your shots then, oh well!!

Stubb’s was built by morons who obviously had no idea how an amphitheater works. Usually the stage is down in an incline so that the lawn seats are upwards in the back, general seating is a little lower and then floor seats are level with the stage. The pit between the barricade and the stage is usually just that: a pit. This is so everyone can see, from the nosebleeds in the way back to those up front who don’t want to see the back of some dude’s head and camera. Stubb’s is flat, so if you’re in the back you’re SOL and if you’re in the front…you’re still fucked! That definitely needs to change if they ever want me to come back!

On to the bands…!
The first openers were a local band called Foxy & Dangerous. They were alright on stage but the chick singer’s voice gave me a hernia and all their songs sounded exactly the same save the last one. Needless to say, I won’t be checking them out anytime soon. Luckily they were off the stage after a quick five songs so it wasn’t too bad.

Foxy Shazam, the next opener, were fantastic. Amazing stage show, great music, crazy funny dudes! They totally killed it and gave Slash and his band a real run for their money. If the Conspirators hadn’t been so great, FS would definitely have stolen the show!

Slash, Myles and the Conspirators, however, were the whole package. They played the perfect mix of new material and old, including stuff from Guns as well as a few Velvet Revolver tunes to top it off. They were energetic and completely over the top! Even though it was hot as sin and we were packed in like sardines, it felt like we were all in it together, the band and fans alike.

Even though there were some rude security guards and shitty “fans” (including a couple groping each other right behind us and some loser playing a harmonica every time Slash played a solo), it was overall an enjoyable evening! Wish the venue would have been better but what can ya do…

We were also fortunate enough to meet Slash afterwards and he was super nice! As Mr. Mean Security Asshole reminded us the whole time we were in line, we were only allowed one item to be signed and I chose (over my GnR records, le sad times) my Apocalyptic Love album. We only spoke for a second but we were able to give them the bracelets we had made for them and my friend also had her book signed. It was awesome!

My Fret With Illegal Downloading

Okay, so I lied in that last post; my days of committing crime aren’t completely over. BUT! they have become way less exciting.

I’m an illegal downloader. A file-sharing con man. A musical thieving, movie stealing rip off nazi. Well, sort of…

I love music. I’ve often said that you could sit me in a room with nothing but my iPod and I’d be happy. That being said, you’re probably asking yourself, “then why aren’t you willing to pay for it?!” Well, I am…sort of…

This is my dilemma: I love the physical copy of records and CDs, tapes and cassettes…holding them in my hands, looking through the booklets, reading each and every word the artists have penned…so I still buy those physical copies whenever available to me. But I live in the technological age of iPods and iTunes and blah blah blah. It isn’t like back in the day when you had a Walkman and cassette and you just slid in your tape and it played. Now everything is digital and if you want the physical copy and a copy to listen to on your iPod, laptop, etc you’re left with a huge dilemma, that being:

DO I BUY IT TWICE TO USE IT TWICE?

If I buy a CD, the physical hard copy, all I can do is listen to it on my CD player at home or in my car’s stereo. However, if I want to listen to a song, say while I’m jogging (I know, that’s a horrible example. Me jogging? Yeah, right) then I’d want to load that sucker up into my iPod and find a pair of headphones. BUT: do I import the physical copy of my CD into iTunes, and download that to my iPod? Or do I buy a digital copy on iTunes, and download that to my iPod?

If you’re an artist or someone in the music industry, you’re most likely going to choose the latter option. Yessss yesssss buyyyy moreeee!!! Giveeee meeee morreee moneyyy!!

However, if you’re an average citizen such as myself that ate mac&cheese for dinner for the third time in a row tonight, you’re obviously going to say to yourself, “well, I already bought one copy, goddamn!”

But really, who’s right? Technically, according to my Twitter franzzz, I’m just making a back-up of something I already purchased. But according my Tumblr franzzz, I’m breaking the law and need to be incarcerated.

My whole beef with illegally downloading, or “file-sharing”, whatever you want to call it, is that you’re never really taking a product. Not physically at least. A billion people could download a song and it’s still there, unlike stealing a car or some other material thing. You’re not so much taking it so much as you are cloning it. Illegally cloning, but nonetheless.

On top of buying CDs and occasionally dealing with the headache known as “the iTunes”, I go to a lot of shows and buy a whole hell of a lot of merch. And maybe this is just my pitiful justification to make up for my strolls down the illegal information highway (that sentence is so stupid it hurts, I’m sorry I subjected you to that) but really, if we’re already paying $50+ per ticket to the show, then buy two $20 shirts on the way out, that’s $70 on average that an artist is going to make from me in one night alone (which, yeah, that all gets divided up and the artist only gets a percentage of that, but for sake of argument and my getting to bed at a reasonable hour, we won’t get into that).

Nowadays, artists and filmmakers alike should just know going in that the illegal downloading of their art is just inevitable. We can have a whole spiel about starving artists and how we should compensate them and blah blah blah. And yes, ultimately everyone will agree that yes, artists should be paid, but uhh, I’ve got a mortgage to pay so maybe later. And we’ll be right back to square one because no one actually cares about anyone but themselves. No one wants to fork over their hard-earned paycheck when they could just get it for free.

My beef with artists is that, shouldn’t your art be more about passion and your love for doing what it is you’re doing? Not for the money but because writing a song or painting a picture or making a movie is what moves your soul (or whatever)?

I’m here to say that, yes, as an artist who has created something, you should get control of it, and you should be payed for it if others are to use it. You should, but you won’t be. Because it’s 2012. Because it’s the information age, the technological rising. And there will be decent folk who will go out and buy your record or pay to see your movie, and that’s great. But just as there are hundreds upon thousands of good folk out there, there’s also us bad seeds who like anarchy and rebellion and…okay, just kidding; we’re just broke…who won’t be as willing to do so. And maybe if you’re truly dedicated enough and live and breathe this dream to be in the greatest band ever or to direct the best movie in the world, you’re going to go somewhere eventually. But if you’re in it for the money, you don’t deserve to go anywhere. The weak are there to justify the strong.

Basically my argument is this: if you’re not willing to sleep on floors, live in van, and eat your body weight in Ramen noodles all to play shitty basement shows to an audience of maybe seven people that may or may not include your mom, or some other scenario of “roughing it”, you’re not willing to accomplish your dreams. Who knows, maybe this illegal downloading biz will weed out the ones who aren’t in it with their whole heart and ARE just there to make a buck or two.

I’m in no place to say who’s right or who’s wrong. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. If you don’t have the money but still want that song, you’re going to download it regardless of who’s getting ripped off or who’s house is getting foreclosed on. And who can blame you when it’s so easy…maybe we should just rip off the rich and the dead and not those starving indie types? That’d be a start.

AlwaysSuckAlways

I suggest watching the full interview but if you don’t have 44 minutes to spare, the drama starts around 35:00

Late to the party yet again! But I just saw the interview with Christopher Drew and some other no-names in BryanStars latest interview and since I have nothing better to do and because I really think these assholes were wayyyy out of line, I’m going to give my two cents!

First of all, I’ve never been a fan of NeverShoutNever; I saw Christopher Drew a couple years ago on Warped Tour and though it wasn’t the worst thing in the world, it certainly didn’t have my panties all up in a bunch with excitement. That being said, my opinion is obviously biased only because I do happen to like BryanStars. I think his interviews are fun and he asks questions that no one else does. I mean, look at how many times artists are asked the same questions OVER AND OVER AND OVER. “Your new album is out, what does the title mean?! I know you’ve been asked this five billion times and every single fan who’s watching this already knows the answer but could you tell us again?” No one but Bryan comes in and is able to be comfortable, joke around and just have a good time with bands. Even when he’s being goofy and everything is completely random, he still elicits a serious response and the artist can usually throw in their words of wisdom if he/she so desires.

Given that, if Christopher Drew didn’t want to do the interview, he should’ve said so before making Bryan and his friends drive for seven hours, pay for a shitty hotel room, and on top of that, sit in the green room in the back of some dingy little club waiting on his ass. He should’ve known the nature of the interview going in, as it was just the same as the one he’d given two years earlier.

The guy on the far left (I don’t know his name, and after the way he treated Bryan, I don’t want to know) is asked two questions, both times responding with an exasperated sigh followed by “I don’t know” as if he’s too good to be there, and that Bryan and all the fans of NeverShoutNever are just a waste of his time. Obviously being in a mediocre band where no one even knows your name is such a huge a time-suck.

The guy on the far right next to Bryan is cool until he starts going through the questions and throwing the ones he doesn’t like on the floor, as if all Bryan’s hard work and effort aren’t good enough for his precious ass. Who even knows how much time it takes to think of the questions, type them up, etc, only to be thrown on the ground like trash. What an asshole.

Everything that’s said to Bryan is completely out of line. For someone who talks about “destroying egos” and blah blah blah, Christopher Drew obviously wasn’t talking about his own. He called Bryan Stars’ entire show a joke, and said that he makes a mockery of everyone he talks to. Why?! Because he’s getting the artists and bands he talks to to open up and have fun? Because he’s enjoying himself and not asking the same five questions like every other interviewer?

I understand wanting to talk about the music, and that sometimes you just have a bad day, but those things are no reason to be a flat out dick to someone, especially a fan who drove seven hours just to see you.

AlwaysSuckAlways have lost all respect I (n)ever had for them, and I can tell you right now, you won’t ever see me buying one of their records again! I hope Bryan and Nate smashed those sunglasses right after the cameras were turned off.

Flyleaf – Dallas, TX – 5/20/12

They’re back!!! Flyleaf, after not playing for almost two solid years, have made a triuphant return! And I got to see it all!! Last night, my five favorite people took the stage at the Palladium Ballroom in Dallas, TX for a benefit concert for their late sound engineer, Rich Caldwell and his wife Katy and two-year-old son, Kirby. Given the nature of the gig, it was definitely an emotional atmosphere, and considering the fact that we were literally two feet from the stage, it was definitely intimate!

First of all, Mr. Ryan White, former lead singer of Resident Hero; current lead singer for Birds of New York, opened the show along with another band who’s name I can’t quite remember (they were good though!) and it was awesome!! I love Ryan and I was sooooo soooo soooo happy he was there! Later in the show he also came out and lent his vocals for an awesome performance of So I Thought!

Flyleaf played their new single from their upcoming album (due this summer!!!) “New Horizons” and on top of Lacey already being on fire and having the voice of an angel, Sameer graced us with his voice as well! Yes, Sameer can sing!! They were shooting the new video, and though I saw lots of cameras on the band, I was too busy rocking out to notice if there were any on the crowd as well. If there were, I was totally in front of Pat and Jared, so definitely look for me! I was of course in a black t-shirt because color is too mainstream. 😉

I can’t wait for the new album! Everything about last night was magical. I believe this is my…err…seventh Flyleaf show? They just keep getting better and better…I need a tour now!!

I know some people asked for a setlist and though I did try, I have the memory of a squirrel and it’s not like I was writing it down buttttt…for the most part, this is how I remember it:

Again
Beautiful Bride
Chasm
Fully Alive
All Around Me
I’m So Sick
Cassie
Sorrow
The Red (which I totally thought was a new song but then was informed that it was actually a Chevelle cover)
Broken Wings
New Horizons
So I Thought
How He Loves
Arise

It definitely seems like they played more than that but alas, that’s all you get from me! I ddn’t record any video because all I had was my iPhone (it has horrible video), but lots of people had amazing cameras that probably cost more than my house so definitely be on the look out for those! I know someone already uploaded New Horizons.

Flyleaf, you did amazing! The new album will be great, and you know I’ll be the first in line to buy tickets to the first show this summer! Please play in Austin next time though; I’ve already made two trips to Dallas this month and as much I like driving, these 3+ hour long car trips are getting old! Hahahha. 🙂

I Hate Asking Alexandria

The only question people should be Asking Alexandria is why they’re still making music and not bagging my groceries at K-Mart where they belong. Not only do they sound like fucking trash (I’ve run over children with lawn mowers who’s screams carry more of a tune than these dipshits) but they’re also complete posers who wouldn’t know what “rock n’ roll” was if it bit them in the ass and then proceeded to beat them with a stick (much like how the rest of us who aren’t tone deaf would like to).

I had the horrible misfortune of stumbling across these asshats when searching for videos of Sebastian Bach live (because that’s what I do at four in the morning, don’t judge me). Not only have these clowns ruined multiple live versions of Youth Gone Wild, they’ve also managed to completely butcher both that song and Skid Row’s 18 and Life on their EP “Life Gone Wild”. You know what really needs to “go wild”? Reality in these guys’ head so they can get back to Burger King and stop making their so-called “music”.

Though I shouldn’t let my hate consume me so much, I honestly will not be happy so long as this band and their shitty ass music are still around. Maybe they can get together with the folks from Blood On The Dance Floor and create some kind of suicide pact? Rid the world of this awfulness already!

And before I get the teenage fuckfaces in here telling me how “grateee && h@rdc0r3” they are and how I’m just “jeelousss and bitter 2 the x-trem3zzz”, I’ll have you know that FUCK YES I’m bitter and jealous. I mean, jeez, my life fucking sucks and I have more talent sitting up my ass than Asking Alexandria do in their whole fucking bodies combined as a unit. Why the hell do they get to work with cool ass people like Sebastian Bach?! Because that children, is the way the world works. Shitty ass bands get to fuck your idols’ biggest hits up right in front of your face and you get to run a blog about it because the people you tried to start a band with in high school never called you back so now your life sucks and will continue to suck forever. Woohoo!

Long story short, if you buy an Asking Alexandria record or support them in any way, shape or form, you’re also supporting the second coming of Hitler and communism and also a puppy will be run over by a truck. Does that sound like a good thing to you?!

Now obviously I can’t be in two places at once, which unfortunately it seems that a lot of bands’ sets are overlapping one another which means some shows I’ll have to be late for, leave early, or just miss altogether. It kind of blows, but out of that list, I have maybe four or five artists that it is MANDATORY to go see. The rest are just filler… This list doesn’t mean that I’ll just be seeing these artists either. There’s a lot of downtime where I won’t be rushing between sets, and I’ll definitely be scoping out some new talent! There are so many bands playing, just looking through the list, some names just really grabbed my attention.

Hope to see some of you there, I know it’s expensive but it truly is such a fun and amazing experience to take part in! And also, I’m probably just tooting my own horn here, but if any of you see me and want an autograph or something, I’ll totally sign some stuff! Don’t know what I’ll be wearing quite yet, but as soon I do I’ll let you guys know so you can spot me in the crowd.

§Rainbows & Skeletons§

As always, I’ll have my security team surrounding me at all times. Please don’t try something stupid and ruin my SXSW experience; I paid entirely too much money for this shit.
