Okay, I have a lot to say so I’m going to divide this up in parts so I don’t leave anything out. Here is my wrap up of Slash’s show at Stubb’s on Sept 7…
First off, I want to thank my body for holding up for the past few days even though I insist on abusing the shit out it and can’t seem to function on any sort of normal schedule to save my life…literally. Through not sleeping, not eating, standing in 106 degree heat for hours on end, drinking nothing but two cups of luke warm water, AND sweating my lady balls off all night, my body refused to collapse or give in. So thanks to myself for not dying! I had been up for three days straight beforehand and standing directly in the sun without drinking hardly anything was definitely risky.
Next I want to say thank you to my amazing friend, TFO, for not only buying the tickets but then flying all the way to Texas and enduring the elements with me to see the amazing Slash. Also thanks for not dying as well! I know you had no desire to queue at two in the afternoon for a show that started at eight but I totally appreciate the fact that you did!
To Stubb’s security, I hate you all and am anticipating your immediate firing! The guys outside the venue weren’t so bad, but once we were inside it was a whole ‘nother ball game. My friend and I got barricade but were all the way at the end on the far right. Since I’m super small (which is always a problem at shows), I was pretty much forced off to the side, outside of the barricade so I was almost next to the stage. I can see why security would have an issue with this considering I could trample the bands’ equipment and rush the stage or something like that, but the fact that they wanted me to move was asinine; there was no where to move to. Five times the security guard came over and attempted to push me into people just to get me behind the barricade. Maybe the first few times I could tolerate but after being there for a few hours and proving time and time again that I not only had no room behind the barricade, but also that I wasn’t some lunatic that was going to ruin the show, they all should have left me alone. Even during the last song of the encore I still had the asshats giving me trouble! I assure you idiots I’m not going to do anything stupid, I just don’t want to be crushed to death if that’s okay with you.
To the photographers, I hate every single one of you and I hope you’re cameras we’re crushed on your way out the door. Again, we’re on the very end of the stage; there’s two huge speakers already blocking the right side of the stage, we don’t need a whole team of press blocking the center as well. Luckily they were only given three songs per band but even that drove me up a wall. I much prefer Guns n’ Roses photo policy: one song for photographers only! If you can’t get your shots then, oh well!!
Stubb’s was built by morons who obviously had no idea how an amphitheater works. Usually the stage is down in an incline so that the lawn seats are upwards in the back, general seating is a little lower and then floor seats are level with the stage. The pit between the barricade and the stage is usually just that: a pit. This is so everyone can see, from the nosebleeds in the way back to those up front who don’t want to see the back of some dude’s head and camera. Stubb’s is flat, so if you’re in the back you’re SOL and if you’re in the front…you’re still fucked! That definitely needs to change if they ever want me to come back!
On to the bands…!
The first openers were a local band called Foxy & Dangerous. They were alright on stage but the chick singer’s voice gave me a hernia and all their songs sounded exactly the same save the last one. Needless to say, I won’t be checking them out anytime soon. Luckily they were off the stage after a quick five songs so it wasn’t too bad.
Foxy Shazam, the next opener, were fantastic. Amazing stage show, great music, crazy funny dudes! They totally killed it and gave Slash and his band a real run for their money. If the Conspirators hadn’t been so great, FS would definitely have stolen the show!
Slash, Myles and the Conspirators, however, were the whole package. They played the perfect mix of new material and old, including stuff from Guns as well as a few Velvet Revolver tunes to top it off. They were energetic and completely over the top! Even though it was hot as sin and we were packed in like sardines, it felt like we were all in it together, the band and fans alike.
Even though there were some rude security guards and shitty “fans” (including a couple groping each other right behind us and some loser playing a harmonica every time Slash played a solo), it was overall an enjoyable evening! Wish the venue would have been better but what can ya do…
We were also fortunate enough to meet Slash afterwards and he was super nice! As Mr. Mean Security Asshole reminded us the whole time we were in line, we were only allowed one item to be signed and I chose (over my GnR records, le sad times) my Apocalyptic Love album. We only spoke for a second but we were able to give them the bracelets we had made for them and my friend also had her book signed. It was awesome!
